Problem Solving

Solving

Coats Technical Services provides operational improvement services in the areas of quality, audit and issues related to manufacture and construction of sewn products.

Coats has more than two and a half centuries of accumulated expertise in finding solutions to the issues faced by the sewing thread, zips and speciality yarn users across all industries. Whether you are a manufacturer of garments, shoes, hand bags, luggage, automotive airbags, seat belts, mattresses, fibre optic cables or any product involving use of thread, zips or finished yarns, Coats can add value to your operations.

Our Technical Services team members will visit a factory and assess problems on the factory floor, at the needle point. For example, this may involve dismantling a sewing machine to discover the issue and correct it. This problem solving analysis may also relate to issues such as seam breakage and seam pucker. Our garment technicians are highly experienced at solving these common issues. We would then develop a report and share information with our customers to help resolve the issues found at factory floor level.

We go directly to our customer at either the factory floor or the head office and help resolve problems in production lines

Presentations
Presentations
Presentations is one of the key aspects for both vendors and for brands, where our Coats Technical Services experts will go into the factories and train them on ‘how to do their jobs better’. We have Technical Services team members available globally who are capable of presenting a range of topics to both brands and vendors, enabling them to significantly improve their garment manufacturing methods. We have presentations on a range of subject matters including final product manufacturing like denim and fine tailoring. We also look at problem solving and knowledge training such as seam puckering and thread types and uses. Our Coats advisors will present this to both brands and vendors generally within an hour, but can also be presented with or in conjunction with needle, trim or backing material suppliers to format a larger presentation pack for larger brands. We have distilled our decades of experience of working with the sewn product manufacturers into a series of seminars. We customise these seminars and deliver them in person to our customers. We present extracts from such seminars for your preview.

Information Hub

Coats technical bulletins provide expertise and are packed with technical insight and knowledge; these are a must read for sewn products manufacturers who are serious about excellent product quality, high levels of productivity and reducing excess costs.

Your denim thread choices. Real-life results

Developed in partnership with ENDRIME®, the Coats Denim Visualiser features a curated gallery of 20 garments made from Orta denim fabric, which have been sustainably finished using wash and finish experts Jeanologia®, using a carefully selected range of thread colours.

Choose your thread, view the gallery, then download your final choice. You can even choose individual thread colours for even more customised designs.

Everything you see has been stitched and shot in real-life. No virtual mock-ups, just results you can trust – as you’d expect from Coats.

  1. Check your presser foot has enough pressure applied to the fabric to give positive feed.
  2. Check and clear your feed dogs of any lint that may have built up.
  3. Check and adjust the height of the feed dogs.
  4. Check your stitch length regulator as it may be set to zero stitch length.
  5. Check the thread tension as it may be loose and the thread may be clogging under the presser foot.
  6. Check your needle plate to ensure it is fixed securely.

Coats does not recommend adding any additional lubricant / silicone on thread. Thread colour may change, it can create large variation of frictions and cause oil staining. Atomised silicone may also become a health issue if breathed by operators / machinists.

The dye uptake depends on many parameters such as cotton type, quality, finish etc. and any difference in these parameters between the fabric and thread will result in shade difference.

To improve seam elongation it is possible to increase the stitch rating per cm or inch, increase the bite, reduce the needle / looper tensions on affected seams or change thread types used.
