Childrenswear Solutions

Softness, security and safety when it matters most

Softness, security and safety when it matters most

Over the years, Coats has developed particular expertise in producing interlinings, threads, trims and zips for childrenswear garments. They take into consideration the factors that matter most for infants and children of all ages, including softness for minimal skin irritation, safety during play and security for freedom of movement.

To provide peace of mind, Coats solutions are supported by a dedicated technical team who are on hand to provide guidance throughout a project lifecycle.

Safety in Childrenswear

Coats RD thread range is designed to deliver on safety when it matters most and meets the flammability requirements of nightwear regulations.

Thread Construction in Childrenswear

Coats uses filament or spun sewing threads in the construction of childrenswear garments. Filament threads are stronger than spun threads of the same fibre and size. There are three different types of filament threads, staple spun and corespun polyester as outlined below. We do not recommend the use of monofilament threads for the manufacture of children and babywear due to its harshness on their sensitive skin.

Sewing Threads - Spun Thread
Staple spun thread

Spun thread is made using natural or synthetic fibres. Spun polyester is one of the most widely used threads. It is stronger than cotton threads of a comparable size, and is available in a wide variety of sizes and colours.

Sewing Threads - Corespun Thread
Corespun thread

Corespun thread is a combination of staple fibres and filaments. The most commonly used corespun thread has multiple-ply construction, with each ply consisting of a polyester filament core with cotton or polyester fibres wrapped around the core.

Sewing Threads - Multifilament Thread
Multifilament thread

Smooth multifilament thread is usually made from nylon or
polyester and is used where high strength is a primary requirement. It
consists of two or more continuous filaments twisted together. Its lubricated finish helps protect against needle heat and abrasion, creating consistent, neat and unobtrusive stitching.

Sewing Threads - Textured Filament Thread
Textured filament thread

Textured filament thread is usually made from polyester and is
used primarily as the looper thread for cover stitches. Texturing filaments
gives the yarn more cover and high extensibility, providing softness and comfort, especially in “next-to-skin” seams in children’s clothing. Coats texturised threads use a higher twist which gives the thread the required strength and flexibility in the final manufactured garment.

Sewing Threads - Monofilament Thread
Monofilament thread

Monofilament thread is made from a single continuous fibre with a
specified thickness. Though monofilament is strong, uniform and
inexpensive to make, it lacks flexibility and is stiff and scratchy in feel so is not recommended for children and babies garments. Usage of this thread is normally restricted to hems, draperies, and upholstered
furniture.

Peace of Mind

  • Sewing threads for childrenswear meet Coats RSL
  • Within the lifetime of children’s garments they will undergo many laundry processes, therefore it is critical that our sewing threads have a high level of colour fastness even in demanding washing conditions
  • Low shrinkage sewing thread properties ensures no seam distortion after washing childrens, toddler and babywear
  • Our sewing threads for children have good seam coverage and softness for neat, comfortable seams especially important for next-to-skin babywear applications
  • Selected sewing threads certified to certified to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, class I, the most stringent class covering textile items for babies and toddlers

Baby embroidery

Embroidery Interlining - Over-The-Back (OTB)

Designed for maximum wearing comfort, this range of very soft adhesive interlinings fuse onto the backside of an embroidery to protect the skin from coarse threads.

Durable and Öko-Tex Standard 100, class I certified, they are ideal for most embroidery applications in newborn garments, childrenswear, and sportswear.

P019048 is recommended for lightweight fabrics around 180gsm, whilst P021450 can be used as an alternative for heavier fabrics.

S021450 is a part of our Coats Permess Ecoverde range made of premium quality 100% recycled polyester interlinings, that is certified according to Global Recycled Standard (GRS). Our sustainable recycled polyester interlining fulfil high quality standards and deliver the same performance as virgin polyester interlining.

Cotton vs Polyester

Polyester is made to be stronger than most natural threads. It is important to avoid using polyester thread with natural fabric. as over time, the stronger polyester thread can break down the weaker cotton fibre of the fabric. Advantages to polyester thread:

  • Durable: Designed for heavy duty use
  • Strong: More tensile strength than rayon or cotton
  • Colourfast: Polyester fibres hold colour pigment longer and through more washes
  • Retains shape: It has much give to it while still retaining its original shape
  • Variety of finishes: Matte finish, or medium to high-sheen finishes
  • Longer lasting: Excellent moisture, rot and mildew resistance

Soluciones de mejora de la productividad

The table below outlines productivity gains from going from local staple spun polyester (SSP) to Astra or Epic. This data is based on a study done with a global brand that manufactures childrenswear.

Parameter Current thread Coats thread Notes
Finished Garments Units per hour 171.8 200.8 End of Line report data
Percent change +16.9%
Thread Breaks Breaks per day 93.6 22.5 Operator recording
Percent change -75.9%

Additionally, skipped stitches reduced 36.2% when moving from current thread to Coats Astra. The outcome of this study was it allowed the brand to produce more garments and with increased quality.
